I agree with the statement above. Plenty of niche opportunities to band together. Interesting post with applications in multiple fields - Thanks

Yes, I agree, its important for most industries to keep up to date with how this technology can benefit them. We've been invovled in setting up this site, specifically for the dental profession - http://www.dentist-networks.com/ , its in the early stages, but I hope its a good start to allowing dentist to communicate in this way, and also promote themselves.
It remains to be seen if niche social network sites can be succesful. There is no question that those that are aimed at the general population and at 20 or 30 somethings are wildly successful. But these are huge categories. I have seen somethings available for health care professionals, dentaltow etc.

I have to agree with you Mike. There are still some organizations that haven't yet expose to this great opportunity and missing chances to be known in the rest of the world. Creating a community online of a specific network helps organization acquires additional knowledge by means of sharing ideas and experiences.

Wow, Facebook would be a horrible idea. Social networking site like that an not for professionals. Facebook is for the youth of the world to share photo, and interests, and should not be used for a professional service, especially medical.

Linkedin would be a better choice, but has a target audience of entrepreneurs and business services.

The best choice, though I have little experience with the site itself, Vimo is a site for heathcare specifically that allows for searching, commenting, and rating of MDs. I've had a number of conversations with one of the creators and despite them selling services online, this would be the place to build a reputation as a great doctor.

But the reality is that there is no Social Networking for MDs (or more specifically, dentists). It's a different generation then what our established doctors grew up in. If you're a doctor, I'd say the best way to have an established online presence would be to do a search for "rate your doctor", pick the top 5, and begin to establish yourself.

This is the benefit I believe most people are missing out on the social networks boom. Any one group of people can network together and be much more powerful as a unified voice instead of a single voice. Good article.
